If the thought of a tuna sandwich (maybe from a sandwich shop that rhymes with Bubway) doesn’t exactly fill you with excitement, I hear you friend. We’re not talking about mystery seafood slop in soggy bread. This is not that tuna melt.

This is a bougie tuna avo sriracha melt.

This tuna avo sriracha melt is a trust-fund baby, un-taxed and unbothered. It went to an Ivy League school without a bursary and graduated with a major in philosophy. That level of bougie.

But luckily YOU don’t have to be bougie to make this tuna melt. If you want to bake your own sourdough from a starter you have been feeding since the pandemic and avocado hand sourced from Peru, then by all means please do.

No matter where you get your ingredients – an artisanal farmers market or own-brands at the supermarket – this sandwich will turn out amazing. Eating it will make you feel, well, better than everyone else – which is the whole point of being bougie, isn’t it?

  • You can use any hot sauce if you don’t have sriracha. Not a fan of the heat? Omit it completely, it will still be just as good.
  • You will want to use a sturdy bread for this melt, there’s nothing worse than a soggy bottom. We have used sourdough but you can also use ciabatta, baguette or any crusty loaf.
  • You can always substitute the tuna with any other fish, shredded chicken or turkey.
  • If you want to simplify this recipe from things you already have in your pantry, just use mayonnaise, tuna, onions and your favourite store bought salad dressing, cheese and bread.

FAQ

How do I prevent a tuna avo sriracha melt from getting soggy?

To prevent your tuna avocado melt from getting soggy, make sure to toast the bread before adding the filling. Using thick slices of bread or sturdy bread like sourdough can also help. Additionally, you can layer the cheese between the bread and the tuna mixture to create a barrier that helps keep the bread from absorbing too much moisture.

I don’t have Sriracha. What should I do?

You can make this recipe with any hot sauce, but adjust according to your spice preference. You can make this without hot sauce if you’re not fond of spice, it will still be as good.

Can I make a tuna avocado melt in advance?

Yes, you can prepare the components of a tuna avocado melt in advance, but it’s best to assemble and toast the sandwich just before serving. Store the prepared tuna salad and avocado separately in airtight containers in the refrigerator for up to 2 days. When ready to eat, assemble the sandwich and toast it until the cheese is melted and the bread is golden brown

Can I add other ingredients to a tuna avocado melt?

Absolutely! A tuna avocado melt is versatile and can be customized with various add-ins. Popular additions include diced celery, pickles, or capers mixed into the tuna salad. You can also add slices of tomato, bacon, or different types of cheese like mozzarella or pepper jack for extra flavour.
